    An economic analysis of the law. Topics include an introduction to legal institutions and legal analysis; application of economic concepts to the law of property, contracts and torts, criminal law, and constitutional law; the economic efficiency of the common law; and a public choice perspective on the evolution of the law. At the conclusion of this course, you will be expected to pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Reading Assessment.   • EDUC 207 - Mathematics Success

    This course is designed for prospective elementary and special education teachers. This course focuses on tasks that are
    essential for effective teaching of elementary mathematics. Students will investigate strategies to implement rich math tasks, with multiple
    representations and the use of manipulatives, in addition to analyzing student strategies and errors. At the conclusion of this course,

  • EDUC 221 - Introduction to Education

    A study of the development of our present-day educational system, with emphasis on historical background and development, aims of education in a democracy, duties of the teacher, purpose and development of the curriculum, facilities, support, and control of the schools.   • EDUC 310 - Assessment and the Data Informed Teacher

    This course will take the candidate through a formative assessment cycle including establishing an understanding of types of assessments, assessment and rubric writing, data collection and analysis, and data informed instruction.   • EDUC 351 - Elementary Education Curriculum

    A study of the development, philosophy, and goals of the K-6 school with particular attention paid to the curriculum, organizational patterns, and classroom management. Emphasis is placed on planning and evaluating developmentally appropriate experiences for children aged five through twelve, including those with special needs.   • EDUC 355 - Teaching Writing Across the Curriculum

    The focus on this course is to assist prospective teacher candidates in refining written and oral communication skills as well as to apply and analyze methodologies of Learning to Write as well as Writing to Learn.     This course is designed for prospective middle grade teachers to learn about effective programs and practices at middle schools.   • EDUC 400 - Reading Foundations

    EDUC 400 focuses on the Foundations of Reading and the reading process. Students explore a variety of instructional approaches for teaching literacy and gain understanding in appropriate assessment practices. Major components of literacy will include phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, concepts of print, the alphabetic principle, diagnosis of reading difficulties, word analysis skills, vocabulary development, methods for assessing reading development, identifying students strengths and weaknesses in using word identification strategies and understanding multiple approaches to reading instruction. Students will focus on strategies for helping all students succeed—including struggling readers and English language learners. Offered in the Spring of Junior Year. Requires 20 hour Short Field Experience Fall Prerequisite(s): Teacher Licensure candidates only.
  
  • EDUC 401 - Children’s Literature

    This course includes reading and evaluating literature for children. Special emphasis is given to the integration of quality literature throughout the entire curriculum. Topics and areas of study include realistic fiction, informational books, biographies, poetry, multicultural literature, historical fiction, and modern fantasy. Prerequisite: majors only.   • EDUC 406 - Integrated Reading

    EDUC 406 focuses on the components of Integrated Reading. Candidates explore a variety of instructional approaches for teaching literacy and gain understanding in appropriate assessment practices. Emphasis is placed on reading literacy and reading comprehension techniques for developmentally appropriate classroom experiences. This class will accommodate diverse candidate population and examine various standards from the ELA Common Core. Major components of literacy will include word analysis skills, vocabulary development, methods for assessing reading development, exploration of genres, and understanding multiple approaches to reading instruction.   • EDUC 410 - Integrative Curriculum

    Course examining  a variety of methods for bringing together various aspects of the curriculum while addressing the needs of learners in an interdisciplinary context. Students will learn to apply teaching methodologies and theoretical principles in a variety of ways in order to intentionally  integrate content across subject areas while addressing developmental needs of students.     Methods for teaching mathematics to elementary students are explored through project based learning experiences ready to take to the classroom. Topics include guiding instruction through elementary math standards, orgaininzing instruction and integrating assessment, and mathematical concepts, skills, and problem solving are the focus of this course.   • EDUC 440 - Instructional Strategies and Contemporary Trends for K-12 and Secondary Teachers

    This course provides an overview of curriculum design, as well as an examination of the general methods, techniques, practices, instructional materials, and teaching strategies deemed appropriate for teacher candidates. In addition, this course focuses on contemporary factors that are relevant to effective teaching, preparation for student teaching and the successful implementation of curriculums. Designed to facilitate the emerging educator’s pedagogical and instructional decision-making skills, the course examines contextual and instructional variables such as curriculum, lesson planning, educational resources, learner assessment, grading and classroom management, as well as venues to facilitate classroom dialogue, learner engagement. The course briefly explores the nature and implementation of effective literacy instructional strategies. Specific issues, practices, and materials will be discussed for enhancing literacy success in the content area classroom. This course is required for those seeking teacher licensure.   • EDUC 455 - Educational Technology Foundations

    Education 455 is designed for candidates planning on becoming elementary, middle, secondary, and K-12 public school teachers. The course familiarizes candidates with strategies that focus on the integration of technology into their work as teachers. Activities focus on candidate integration of technology in communications and infusion of technology in the learning process, record keeping, assessment strategies, and the potential integration of emerging technology into the classroom. Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of technology with emphasis on its use in education as well as its impact on society.     This course explores the operation and utility of many, common electronic components. It introduces students to semiconductor operations and to standard forms of analysis, in particular to frequency analysis and Bode plots. It provides methods to synthesize useful and robust circuits that are used in many applications in most industries.  Prerequisite(s): ENGR 260  and MATH 223  with grades of C or higher.

    This course will be a hands-on, interactive introduction to design of embedded systems focusing on microcontrollers. Students will study the control of peripheral systems and devices in relation to the embedded system consisting of microcontroller or processor, software, circuits, and mechatronics.     This course is designed to facilitate students’ integration into the learning community of the university. The course enhances students’ skills for academic success in engineering, develops students’ understanding of engineering and university culture, fosters students’ meaningful educational engagement in engineering, familiarizes students with engineering careers, introduces students to engineering professionalism and ethics, and promotes behaviors important for academic success in engineering.   • ENGR 110 - Introductory Engineering Applications

     This course will provide an introduction to engineering through physical, visual, and mathematical modeling of phenomena. Specific topics include linear relationships, two-link robots, polar and vector notation, systems of equations, and flowcharts. Students will model these phenomena in hands-on labs, then mathematically and visually model the concepts by hand and through MATLAB software. In addition, spatial-visualization and MATLAB training will be offered. The course will meet for three lecture hours per week.
