Admission Policy for Teacher Education

All students pursuing a program leading to teacher licensure must meet all requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program. Admission to and completion of student teaching do not guarantee licensure. Licensure is contingent upon successful completion of all State Board of Education requirements for the licensure sought.

Application for admission to the teacher education program should be submitted during the second semester of the student’s sophomore year. All requirements for formal admission to Teacher Education must be met by the beginning of the semester prior to the semester in which practicum is to be done.

Criteria for Admission to the Teacher Education Program

The criteria for admission to the Teacher Education Program include the following:

  • A grade point average of 2.7 or better in overall scholastic work; a “C” or better in all courses in the major field or concentration; a “C” or better in all required Professional Education courses.
  • Approval of the Teacher Education Program and the major department, if a secondary or K- 12 education major.
  • No academic, disciplinary, or social probations.
  • Satisfactory scores on the Core Praxis Academic Skills for Educators. The Core-Praxis series of exams may be waived with sufficiently high SAT or ACT scores.
  • Completion of the Teacher Education application within the TK-20 Electronic System.

Applications for practicum placements must be submitted by November 1 for spring semester placements, and by April 1 for fall semester placements. Applications for student teaching placements must be submitted by April 1 for fall semester placements and by November 1 for spring semester placements.

Requirements for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s Initial License

To qualify for Campbell University’s recommendation for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s Initial License, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree must be earned in one of the programs listed below. In addition, all professional education and licensure requirements must be met. Satisfactory scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis II (for content areas such as Middle Grades, K- 12 and Special Education) Examinations (elementary and special education candidates must obtain passing NC Foundations of Reading and Math licensure exams), must be submitted to the Dean’s office, along with the other required completed forms for licensure.  All candidates must successfully pass all licensure exams before being recommended by Campbell University for the North Carolina Professional Educator’s Initial License.

Students entering Campbell University with SAT/ACT scores which do NOT exempt them from taking the CORE PRAXIS are afforded multiple opportunities to prepare for the CORE PRAXIS.  EDUC 106  (Mathematics) and EDUC 107  (Reading) are specifically created to prepare students for the CORE PRAXIS.  Passing the CORE PRAXIS, or having acceptable SAT/ACT scores is one requirement for acceptance into the Teacher Education Program at Campbell University.

Students preparing for the required exams for the initial NC Teacher License will prepare throughout their program of study with certain courses dedicated to preparing these students for success on licensure exams.  Students must work closely with their advisor and professors in order to take advantage of these opportunities.  Passing the licensure exams is one requirement for recommendation for the initial NC Teacher License.
