Students who earn a bachelor of science in pharmaceutical sciences (BSPS) degree are prepared to enter research and technical positions in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in academic government laboratories, or to pursue post-graduate studies. The BSPS program offers one of the most extensive laboratory-based programs in North Carolina.
|
Major Requirements
In addition to the GCC requirements and science prerequisites, pharmaceutical sciences majors must complete the following didactic and laboratory courses to earn a B.S. degree in this major:
Note:
Following these courses, pharmaceutical sciences majors are required to complete a semester-long internship (PHSC 420 - 14 credit hours if completed in the spring, 12 credit hours if completed in the summer), along with a final senior internship presentation (PHSC 416 ). GCC courses and pharmaceutical sciences courses must total at least 124 credit hours.
Internship Opportunities
Internship opportunities in North Carolina are plentiful since the state has one of the largest concentrations of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in the United States. Currently, there are hundreds of pharmaceutical research and manufacturing sites in North Carolina. Most of these pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are located in nearby Research Triangle Park.
Additionally, several major research universities and government agencies are nearby. Students may choose internship sites based upon their future career goals including academic, research, manufacturing, analytical, biotechnology, forensics, formulation, or validation. In addition to hosting senior BSPS students for their internships and summer employment, many of these sites also provide opportunities for permanent positions upon graduation.
Pharmaceutical Sciences 3+2 Program
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences provides an option for students to earn both their Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences degrees. Traditionally, earning both degrees would take a total of six years. With the 3+2 degree option, students are on a fast track toward completing both degrees in five years. This program provides students with a competitive edge in the job market and rapid career advancement.
Admission Requirements
Students working toward a BSPS degree may apply for the 3+2 program if they have a minimum GPA (overall and major) of 3.0 after the fall of the junior year. BSPS students interested in completing the 3+2 program should apply by March of their junior year to assure a place in the MSPS program.
